Since 2021 has officially ended, it’s time to welcome new beginnings, new resolutions, and, most importantly, new fashion trends. As Y2K reemerges in the fashion industry, there’s no doubt that 2022 has plenty in store for us. Ahead is a list of clothing items that are predicted to define this year, brought to you by Sophie Fung '25.
Kelly, Alyssa. “Bella Hadid in Low-Rise Jeans.” CR Fashion Book, 20 Sept. 2019, https://www.crfashionbook.com/fashion/g29035975/low-rise-trend-bella-hadid-emily-ratajkowski/.
1. Low Rise Jeans
The Universal Law of Gravitation applies to fashion just as well as it does to physics: what goes up must come down. After high-rise jeans dominated the spotlight over the last few years, low-rise jeans are now ready to make their grand comeback. Celebrities like Bella Hadid and Kim Kardashian are already leading the game.
Isaac-Goizé, Tina. “Jacquemus Spring 2021 Ready-To-Wear.” Vogue, 16 July 2020, https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/spring-2021-ready-to-wear/jacquemus.
2. Cutouts
From runway shows to red carpet looks, cutouts in asymmetrical tops and midi dresses are undeniably a favorite pick for high-end designers such as Christian Siriano, Stella McCartney, and Simon Jacquemus. Alternatively, cutouts can styled casually by incorporating denim elements.
3. Miniskirts
This is one self-explanatory. Half a century after their debut in the 1960s, miniskirts have beaten the little black dress in the fight for the “best wardrobe staple.”
“Gray Vintage Style Pattern Printed Oversized T Shirts.” AliExpress, 2022, https://www.imedent.cl/Product/Premium-165994.htm.
4. Oversized T-Shirts
They’re comfortable; they’re versatile; and they’re effortless. It’s about time to give some more appreciation to the baggy, oversized t-shirts sitting at the back of the closet.
5. Baby Tees
A fashion item several international brands have their eyes on, the baby tee is a perfect throwback to the Y2K aesthetic.
“1460 Women's Smooth Leather Lace Up Boots.” Dr. Martens, 2022, https://www.drmartens.com/intl/en/p/originals-boots-felix-rub-off-vegan-1460.
6. Doc Martens
You can’t go about a day without seeing them, and neither can I. Although designed back in the 1940s by a WWII doctor named Klaus Martens, these heavy lace-up boots are now ubiquitous.
