Event Recap: Promenade

Mendelssohn! Harry Potter! Hayden! Olivia Klatte '24 recaps YML's Promenade musical event.

On April 1st, YML (the SAS music club) hosted an event called Promenade, where their musicians performed alongside other musicians from Tri-M (the music honor society). Due to COVID, there was a restriction on the amount of people that could attend, thus most audience members watched the concert from the live-stream by SAS TV. The content ranged from a Harry Potter medley to Woodwind Quintets. The performance lasted for around an hour and a half in the Black Box Theater and was well-received by the audience. The performers came from all four grade levels of High School, showing the diversity of this event. After the concert, many audience members described how amazed they were by the performances and their excitement for future events hosted by YML and Tri-M.

The first performance was the Harry Potter Medley, a piece of music that contained a mix of different themes from the Harry Potter movie, with around ten musicians on instruments ranging from the violin to the trumpet. This modern piece significantly contrasted to the pieces that were performed next which were all classical pieces composed by a large variety of composers such as Hayden and Mendelssohn. However, despite the hardships that everybody faced this year due to the restrictions from COVID, this event was a great success.

Being a part of YML myself, this experience was an amazing opportunity. I performed as part of the Harry Potter medley, the Hayden Divertimento, and played a Mendelssohn violin concerto at Promenade’s end. The performance experience was enjoyable and relaxing since it was a fantastic opportunity for me to practice my stage confidence and performance skills. I believe the same experience applied to the other performers. Although Promenade is only hosted every once in a while, it is one of the best musical events from SAS that genuinely shows students’ talents.

YML, alongside Tri-M, will be hosting many more events in the future, and I highly recommend those who are reading this article to attend. It is a great way to show school spirit and support those performing, not to mention a accessible way to losing oneself into the enjoyment of music. Bob Marley once said: “The best thing about music is that when it hits you, you feel no pain.” It can be guaranteed that at these musical performances, you will be “hit” multiple times by the large diversity of the music presented by students, yet it will bring nothing but happiness.
